WassUp: WordPress plugin to see statistics of access (real time)
May 8, 2008 2 comments
Plugins Wordpress to measure access to statistics there are several. The difference is the WassUp register the entries in real time (even!). Learn more about WassUp.
It is very important measure, analyse and monitor access to web sites and blogs, for several reasons. Only on to cite a few, could comment:
- Define the best times for publishing articles;
- Learn what are the best hours for a "lightning promotion";
- Knowing the habits of your target audience (day or night, for example);
- Obtaining access to create targeted marketing campaigns;
- Developing strategies of SEM;
- Among many others.
To this end, there is a wide range of possibilities, ready to open for those who want and / or need to know about the statistics of access to your site or blog. The most common for this type of information on specific systems are visitors to learn more about the origin of access, residence and exit of reasons (such as Google Analytics, Woopra, Analytics Yahoo and Microsoft adCenter Analytics) those who visit the virtual space. But the chances are not so close.
For those using the Wordpress platform to create and maintain blogs or customize the CMS to stay in the "style" web site, there are plug-ins statistics very efficient! After some testing, I chose to use, "officially", the WassUp.
Install the plug WassUp
No mystery to install the extension. Just download the latest version, unpacking the default folder of plugins (wp-content/plugins /), access the administration panel of Wordpress (with privileges to access the tab "Plugins") and enable the Wassup, which now must appear in the listing of extensions.
Unlike the majority of extensions to Wordpress, the options of Wassup not appear as a submenu of the tab "Options", but instead, a new item on the main menu appears ( "WassUp"). Here, there are 4 options: "Visitors Details", "SPY Visitors", "Current Visitors Online" and "Options".
Visitors Details

This is the main screen of the extension. Here, you can view the statistics of access and refinement of various options are available.
The statistics of access for visitors and pageviews are shown by numbers and graphically (the blue line are continuous visits and orange are dotted pageviews). Also, numerically it is possible to obtain access to the average of pages viewed per visit and percentage of visits that, actually, were SPAMs (forgot to comment that he has integration with Akismet?). You can also adjust the view of statistics in 4 different periods: 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month and 1 year.
There is also the possibility to adjust how many details of access will appear on screen (10, 20, 50 or 100) and sort them by a number of options (Spam, Bots, users logged, members, a reference to external links and more).
The detail of information about visitors is incredible: IP, date, time of access on each page, if came for the referral link, the search system (in this case, reports the key words used) or visit direct, country of origin (shows flag), if it is bot (identifying what is), spam or human visitor (signed or not). Oh, and if you need to do a search on statistics, it is also possible!
SPY Visitors
Certainly, one of the most impressive features of WassUp! You can monitor real-time if there is any activity on the blog, if any, on what page (s) visitor (s) is (will), if they came through the referral link, the search system or has direct access, and other information similar to those which are possible have access to "Visitors Details."
And when I say "real time", I refer the update of 10 in 10 seconds with information on activities (via AJAX) for a monitoring ultra refined and specific í I am!
Current Visitors Online
On this screen you can know how many visitors are on the blog at the time (with details of the information already mentioned above).
In my view, this could be a "SPY Visitors", as an additional information, and not included in an option independent of WassUp…
Options
Here are the options for extension. So many, that it took dividí them into "sub-tabs."
First the General Options ( "General Setup"), where you can set the width (in pixels) of the chart of hits, if this graphic vai appear on the first page of the administrative panel of Wordpress, how many how many minutes in the chart should be updated , What information will be displayed for visitors, among many, many other options.

In the second sub-tab, "Statistics Recording", are the options concerning the recording of statistics. Among the many possible options, it may veto IPs and pages of the site to be saved.
In "Manage & Database Files" are the options that affect the registration statistics in the database that creates WassUp in Wordpress. You can specify the folder where temporary information will be stored, view the current size of the database, specify periods so that old records are erased automatically, and some other things.
Finally, the sub-tab to uninstall the plug WassUp and remove anything that he created in the installation of Wordpress when it was activated.
Conclusions on the use of WassUp
Among the many non-plug-ins for access statistics for Wordpress that I used, what pleased me most and attended to my needs was the WassUp. From what I wrote above, you can see that it is quite complete, displays enough information and, I say from my own experience, is well r á pido and not weigh anything in the loading of the remainder of the options in the panel of administration of Wordpress.
The great advantage, in my view, is the ability to monitor, "live", which the visitors have done and are doing on the blog! It's all bastente fast and reliable (did tests of access to colleagues), and facilitates the opening of "new horizons" in the context of defining estrat é nologies to the blog.
As disadvantages, or rather, defasagens, says that statistics of the main WassUp could well be more complete, with the right information even more specific and afuniladas as Google Analytics, for example (who even use jointly with the WassUp to record the accesses).
You can not stop themselves from access to the blog blocking scripts, since its operation occurs in the server side. For some this may be advantage, for others, not…
Finally, I reaffirm that the WassUp is a very useful plugin to be installed; really worth the pain! However, I see no reason not to use jointly with other types of services that have the capability to display more detailed information about access.
Do you know any good alternative?
