Duplicate Content: penalty in search engines?

The duplicate content, or texts repeated in different sites, can be penalized by Google and other search engines. However, there are ways to alleviate it.
Google gives some general guidelines about the duplication of content ú; these guidelines which, I believe, apply to the other (read: less significant) search engines. Good read what Google states on duplicate content.
In the site Easylogics there is a good product with some guidance about duplication of content and some things that should not be done. It is worth reading the article "Avoid Duplicate Content."
Well, the fact is that in a conversation with Ronit Rozen, Artigonal, arose the question of publishing the same article in different sites, where it would be really damaging to ranking in search engines, and everything else.
He made a web search and found a good explanation from Matt Cutts on duplicate content. Basically, it says that we should:
- Avoid publishing the same article overpaid (that is, in many different sites);
- Insert a link to the original content.
In the words of Matt Cutts, this helps ensure that the original content has more PageRank, which helps choose the best documents in our index.
In my case, in particular, to avoid this, write the article in other sites with variations in the text. This considerably reduces the size of the article, sometimes, but I think, helps with the potential problem of duplication of content and penalty by search engines.
Then, staff, if someone wants to publish articles on different web addresses, choose only 2 or 3 sites (that "many different sites" is very subjective, I understood that this number is acceptable) to do so and, of course, do not forget to place a link to the original content.
