Thousands of Types
In other times, creating a kind - or a whole family of types - was very complicated task, since it was literally hand. With the advent of the machine, Gutemberg and printing of books "in mass", things were a little better. Currently, then, when access to computers of various kinds, prices and configurations is something quite common, anyone with a little effort can create a good type and distribute it on the internet.
But there are classifications, categories of types, which should be known to us, web designers to work in a way better, better things and, if so, categorize the type done by ourselves, on the show above.
The 6 categories of types
There are some "systems" of classification / categorization types; personally, I agree with what Robin Williams uses and shows in his book "Design for non-designer", which explains why the 6 main types of groups are:
- Former;
- Modern;
- With serif (or "serifado");
- Without serif;
- Manuscript;
- Decorative.
Each of these categories of different kinds deserves explanation separate and special attention to some important details. Hence, this part of the series Typography with focus on web design is for you to know the different types, know of its existence and, in the coming series of articles, each of the categories of different types will be explained in more detail.
Meanwhile, to continue monitoring the rest of the series, it is important you know the elements of any type, are elements that characterize and differentiate the 6 categories of existing types. To study on this subject, read the article "Typography organization of the elements" of Daniele Viana.
In the next article in the series: the category types of "Old".
